Lethbridge County Celebrates 60 Years

Lethbridge County is ringing in 2024 by celebrating its 60th anniversary as a municipality. The County was first incorporated on January 1, 1964 as the County of Lethbridge No. 26, amalgamating the MD of Lethbridge No. 25 and Lethbridge School District No. 7. The name was changed to County of Lethbridge in 2000, and finally to Lethbridge County in 2014 to coincide with the 50th anniversary. At this time, a new logo that represents the region’s agricultural roots was also unveiled.

“We are thrilled to be celebrating 60 years of growth, progress, and community,” says Reeve Tory Campbell. “Lethbridge County has emerged as an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family, and I am immensely proud to call the County home.”

Since its inception in 1964, Lethbridge County has grown to become the most productive agricultural community in Alberta, generating nearly $4 billion annually in economic activity. The County is home to the highest concentration of livestock operations in the province, and a significant value of in-demand crops like wheat, barley, and canola are grown across the vast stretches of fields. An innovative spirit exists among producers and local businesses, propelling the County forward and allowing the region to withstand uncertain and challenging economic times throughout its history.

With the evolution and success of the County’s agriculture industry since 1964, there has also been steady growth in the agri-food sector, allowing more products to be finished in southern Alberta and exported across the country and around the world. The County is transitioning from a history of feeding the region, to feeding a growing population across the globe.

The future is bright for Lethbridge County, as Council and staff work to cultivate investment in the region and provide services that help residents and businesses succeed.

“Going forward, we hope to further build upon the deep legacies of Lethbridge County’s producers, businesses, and residents and to foster regional collaboration to find innovative solutions to challenges for the benefit of us all,” says Campbell.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary, events and initiatives are planned throughout the year that will bring the community together to celebrate and recognize the rich history, vibrant culture, and promising future of Lethbridge County. The public is encouraged to watch the County’s website and social media for more information.
