Fire Advisory
A Fire Advisory has been issued for Lethbridge County, effective Wednesday, February 26 due to warmer weather, sustained high winds and reduced snow cover. These conditions have dried out vegetation, making it easier for a small spark to ignite and spread out of control.
To determine when a Fire Advisory is necessary, Lethbridge County uses a data-driven and evidence-based approach. We regularly review local weather forecasts, wind conditions and vegetation moisture levels, and consult with regional fire chiefs to assess potential risks. When these indicators show an increased chance of fast-spreading fires, the County issues advisories to protect public safety and property.
A Fire Advisory means that fire permits will continue to be issued, and recreational fire pits, incinerators and burn barrels are still allowed. As always, anyone conducting a burn cannot proceed if wind speeds exceed 25 kilometres per hour and must ensure water is on-site and fully extinguish the fire once burning is complete.
Smoking materials should never be discarded into County ditches, but it is especially dangerous when conditions are dry.
“We’re asking everyone to take extra precautions while we’re under the Fire Advisory,” says Heath Wright, Regional Manager of Emergency Services. “A small spark or ember from an unattended fire or discarded cigarette can start a grass fire that could quickly get out of control.”
