New Online Fire Permit Application System Launched

Residents of Lethbridge County can now access an all-new online application portal for fire permits.

The new system aims to be a more streamlined process for both applicants and County staff.  It includes a text messaging feature that will improve communication between the County and permit holders.

When a citizen enters the online portal from our website or app, they will be taken through the rules and guidelines for responsible burning.  The goal is to eliminate any confusion as to what materials can be burned and under what circumstances.

Once a permit has been approved, it will be texted to the permit holder’s mobile phone.  Text messages will also be sent when the permit expires after seven days and when a Fire Ban or Fire Restriction is issued.

The previous online application form did not have texting functionality and permits could only be issued during office hours.  The new system allows citizens to apply for a fire permit anytime, including weekends and holidays.

“Our previous online form was not as comprehensive as the new application portal and presented some challenges for staff and applicants,” says CAO, Ann Mitchell.  “Moving to a more comprehensive system will allow our Fire Services Manager to ensure residents applying for a permit fully understand the regulations around burning and are complying with our bylaws.  We recognize the importance of efficiency and anticipate that the time it takes to receive a permit will be significantly reduced.”

To apply for a fire permit, visit https://lethcounty.ca/p/fire-permits or download the Lethbridge County app, free in the Apple or Google Play stores.

Applications must be made through the online portal.  Staff can assist with applications in-person at our Lethbridge office (#100, 905 4 Avenue S.).  Fire permits are required by bylaw for open burning but are not required for recreational campfires or burning barrels.
