A Fire Ban has been issued for Lethbridge County, effective 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026. This has been upgraded from the existing Fire Restriction, due to the extreme wildfire risk in the region.
Under the Fire Ban, all burning is prohibited until further notice.
Not allowed:
- Recreational campfires
- Burning barrels and incinerators
- Charcoal briquette barbecues
- Any other open flame in a burn pit or pile (ie. burning yard waste; burning that would normally require a fire permit)
- Fireworks
Still permitted are:
- Gas or propane heaters, stoves and barbecues that are CSA approved or ULC certified
- Wood pellet grills
- Gas or propane firepits/rings that are CSA approved or ULC certified
Why the risk is high
Although the landscape looks green and lush, fire spread data shows conditions are rated "Very High" to "Extreme" after a long stretch of hot, dry weather. Crops may be more resistant to fire spread, but drier vegetation (grass, weeds, and other growth) on public and private property ignites easily. It only takes one spark to start a fast-moving grass fire.
“This Fire Ban reflects how serious current conditions are," says Heath Wright, Director, Emergency Services. "Dry vegetation across the region means even a small, contained fire can spread quickly with just one spark. Under the Ban, all burning is prohibited until conditions improve. It's a straightforward precaution to protect the community.”
The County continuously monitors fire data to determine when restrictions are needed, including these sources:
Report illegal burning
Report illegal burning to 403.329.1225 or call 911 if a fire appears to threaten public safety, livestock, or property. If the fire department is dispatched to illegal burning activities, the landowner will be responsible for the cost of the response and may face fines.
Dispose of yard debris safely

Burning household garbage, tires, silage bags, plastic, or anything other than yard debris is illegal at all times, Fire Ban or not.
Other everyday fire risks
Ditches are also a concern, as dead grass accumulates and dries out, creating a perfect source of fuel and ignition. Drivers are asked to never toss cigarette butts or other smoking materials out of their vehicle. This is one of the most common causes of grass fires — and one of the most preventable.
Off-highway vehicles (OHVs), commercial vehicles, and equipment can also start fires. Check equipment regularly for debris buildup and make sure it's in good working condition to avoid sparks and overheating. Lethbridge County staff have been instructed to be extra vigilant as our vehicles and equipment travel throughout the region.
