Post Date:01/18/2019 2:03 PM
LETHBRIDGE– Lethbridge County received a decision today from Alberta’s Court of Appeals that the Business Tax has been upheld. The tax will continue to be collected annually to fund road and bridge projects in the County.

“We are pleased with the court’s ruling,” says Reeve Lorne Hickey. “Today’s decision will allow Lethbridge County to continue the work we have started and ensure our infrastructure is safe and reliable, and that our producers can get their products to market. The Business Tax enables Lethbridge County to continue to fund these necessary improvements to our roads and bridges for our citizens and business owners.”

The Business Tax was implemented in 2016 as a solution to the provincial and federal funding shortfall for the County’s essential infrastructure. Several roads and bridges had deteriorated to the point of closure due to age and heavy use by commercial vehicles.

After several public consultation sessions and careful consideration by Council, the Business Tax structure was chosen to best capture the intensive operations that rely on municipal infrastructure 365 days a year. The tax also addresses the lowest possible costs of implementation and administration for the County.
